“Fashion
is a group choice. No one has individual fashion. Fashion is a group decision
whereas style deals with individuals. When style is embraced by a group of
people, it becomes fashion” (Sociologyguide 2). Fashion is always changing
which is important. Fashion is a huge part of human life. For example some
popular trends today such as sweaters and leggings are extremely popular this
fall and winter. I would often hear my Aunt say, “oh I used to have a sweater
just like that when I was in high school.” It’s funny to think that I am
wearing the same outfit as someone who went to high school in the 80s. Today
baggy sweaters, leggings, oversized tee shirts, boots, and scarves are very in.
Back in the 80s, the same type of clothing was in as well. Skinny jeans made
their way back from the 1990s. Acid washed pants were popular in the 80s as
well and are making a comeback in 2012. Neon and band tee shirts are also
popular today. Ironically the 1980s-1990s was the age of neon. Colorful
leggings, flamboyantly bright headbands and accessories are being worn today. You
see many people bring back old trends. Their styles are so amazing and tasteful
that people tend to copy. When groups of people wear or have the same style,
sociologically that style becomes fashion. Famous people are great examples. In the United Staes we follow the fame. They are our heroes and our icons. Most designers
give people like Blake Lively, Mila Kunis, and Jennifer Aniston clothes to wear
in hopes that the style or trend they create will emerge into fashion. Heidi
Klum said it best her self, “in the fashion world one day you are in and the
next day you are out.”

Fashion gives us that originality and
that traditionalism our society craves. “Fashion satisfies desires necessary
for living in society. It is custom belief to have fashion and wear clothes”
(Sociologyguide 4). Fashion sets us up for change. Change is inevitable. How
many times have you heard your mother say, “that doesn’t match go change” or
“That doesn’t look good go change”? I know I have. Change is something we are
used to. Even hearing those words sets us up for the bigger picture: the
changing of styles. We don’t see people wearing corsets and big dresses or
bonnets anymore. Our fashion sense evolves and just like evolution, the
“fittest” entity is the one that will move on. Most popular trends are the ones
that re-occur. For example, colors. Back in the 1990s; orange, greens, browns,
and blacks were very in. That trend was so strong that you see a lot of those
same colors in fall and winter clothes today. Each season has its own color
pallet that is often seen throughout history. Whites, blues, and blacks are
winter colors and bright colors such as yellow, orange, blue, green, pink, and
white are summer/spring colors. We often associate colors with seasons.

It is said that specific trends will go out of style and then reemerge every ten to fifteen years. This is true. If you attended high school in the 1960s-1990s you are starting to see that the younger generations are wearing the same types of clothes and styles. Each year styles do return but however they are not always the same. Each year, every new trend brings something new to the table. It adds on to the trend and modernizes it. For example, corduroy skinny jeans were very popular in the 70s and 80s. They just recently became popular again but this time they are in purples, reds, greens, blues, oranges, and browns. Back then the two main colors worn were orange and brown. The 1960s-1970s was a time of rebellion. Girls started to wear jeans instead of skirts. Older generations thought that this was crazy and unacceptable. Those teenagers rebelled through not only music but fashion as well. Today teenagers use fashion as freedom of expression. We will wear skirts that say, “Vote for Obama”, “Legalize Weed”, “I Vote for Vodka”, and much more. Even thought they are just shirts the symbolization is much more. The shirts are a form of protest. People wear the shirts because they are for the message. They advertise their point of view when they wear the shirt in public.

“SFFAMA is the
largest and most innovative fashion organization in Northern California”
(sffamanic). SFFMA stands for San Francisco
Fashion and Merchants Alliance. SFFMA Is a non-profit
organization in Northern California. It educates people in the changing of
styles that currently happen in the fashion world. The main purpose of this organization
is to use technology and social media to sell products. The economy is a
problem so this organization is trying to help people who are struggling
out. This organization is trying to educate us on the real problem in the
world through a common subject. Everyone loves fashion. Fashion is a main form
of advertisement. No matter what clothes you wear, you are constantly and
currently advertising. Advertising is a huge way and the main way that fashion
designers and stylist get their products out to the world. By join or informing
yourself on this will help America in retrospect. Lets all join in and help the
world. Please visit http://sffamainc.org/ for more information.
Fashion
and sociology goes hand in hand. Change is ineveitable and society is
constantly undergoing change. No matter if it is change in style or change in
weather, we as people are changing. Fashion is a way of easy expression. It’s
the one thing people look at. Cloths are advertisements. Fashion is a huge
factor in finding social groups. Most people interact with other who look like them,
dress like them, and have the same style. Fashion affects us. The media is a
key factor in fashion. The media controls us. Fashion and the media can be
dangerous on our youth today. Many kids endure bullying because of fashion.
Most kids today use fashion as a social weapon. Fashion in the media pressures
kids. They feel as if they have to look a certain way and act a certain way to
be accepted into society. Just as fashion could be a positive thing, it also
has its negative effects. All models are size zeros and everyone in the fashion
world is skinny and looks a certain way. Marilyn Monroe was a famous fashion
icon in the 50s. She has beautiful curves and was a normal waste size. During
her time she was seen as the perfect body and the perfect person. As time
progressed models became skinnier and skinnier and certainly less healthier.
Today there is a real bodies campaign. Cover Girl is finding real bodies that
are beautiful as models. Only a small percentage of girls have “perfect bodies”.
Cover Girl is incorporating real
bodies into their advertisements to show the world that all types of women are
beautiful. Fashion is a result of disorders such as bulimia and anorexia. By
using real bodies, the media is hoping to settle down these image disorders.
